Below is Ejnar Hertzsprung’s letter in the 1923 February issue of The Observatory in which he disowned any credit for the three-letter abbreviations of the constellations that were adopted by the IAU at its inaugural General Assembly held in Rome in 1922 May. Hertzsprung’s own two-letter list was published prior to the General Assembly in Annalen van de Sterrewacht te Leiden, but the IAU adopted H.N. Russell’s three-letter abbreviations instead. Note that in line 2 of the letter below, the reference to p. 12 should read p. 22.
