Brazil 1899 – Southern Cross (surcharges)
Above: A selection of values from the 1899 Southern Cross overprint series. Notice the considerable difference in size and shape of the first two examples, which are in fact exactly the same-value stamp.
Eight of the values from the 1890 Southern Cross series were reissued in 1899, overprinted with the new date and increased values. These stamps are of better quality than the 1890 issues and easier to come by. Being hand-perforated, as with the other Brazil issues of this era, their sizes and proportions vary.
