Brazil 1940 – Child and Southern Cross

Brazil 1940 Child and Southern Cross

One of a set of four stamps issued in favour of child welfare, hence the wording ‘Pro Juventude’, this stamp shows a child looking at the Southern Cross. The asymmetric shape of the Cross is well captured but, as with the Brazil stamp of 1930, it is a mirror image of the constellation as seen in the sky. This same stamp was reissued in 1944 overprinted AEREO (i.e. for airmail use) with five separate surcharge values (SG nos. 693–7).
