Norway 1941 – Boat and aurora

Norway 1941 Boat and aurora

Issued in favour of the fishermen’s families relief fund, this stamp shows an old-fashioned Norwegian longboat known as a fembøring in front of snow-covered mountains typical of northern Norway (the Gibbons catalogue describes it as an iceberg but they are clearly wrong). There also seems to be a pretty good aurora going on overhead, enough to merit inclusion in this compilation. The wording ‘Hålogaland utstillingen Mai–Juni 1941’ refers to the Hålogaland exhibition of 1941 held in Oslo – see the poster for it here, very similar in design to the stamp.
