Poland 1955 – Nicolaus Copernicus

Poland 1955 Nicolaus Copernicus

This memorial to Nicolaus Copernicus stands front of the Staszic Palace in Warsaw, home of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In his left hand he holds an armillary sphere, in his right a pair of dividers (which do not show up on this engraving – see here for a better view). The statue is the work of the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844) and was unveiled in 1830. The stamp is part of a set of eight depicting various Warsaw monuments.
