Israel 1956 – Albert Einstein
As one of the greatest scientists of all time, Albert Einstein (1879–1955) has understandably featured on numerous stamps from around the world. His first appearance was on this Israeli stamp issued the year after his death. It came with a nice souvenir tab, as Israeli stamps commonly do.
Einstein’s theory of relativity was the foundation of modern cosmology and of our understanding of gravity and the Universe. Recently even his so-called cosmological constant, a factor which he once described as his ‘greatest blunder’, has been revived as a possible explanation for the apparent acceleration of the expanding Universe.
