2005 Stonehenge (World Heritage set)
Part of a series depicting World Heritage sites in the UK and Australia, this stamp shows the distinctive standing stones of Stonehenge, although the subject might not have been immediately recognizable to those more familiar with a distant view of the stone circle. The bird perched on the lintel is a jackdaw.
The World Heritage set was issued jointly with Australia in 2005 April. The UK subjects were man-made monuments while the Australian ones were natural formations. Stonehenge was joined on the first-class stamps by the Wet Tropics of Queensland, while the subjects on the second-class stamps were Hadrian’s Wall and the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park (which includes Ayers Rock, now known as Uluru). Blenheim Palace and the Greater Blue Mountains Area featured on the 47p stamps, while the stones of Neolithic Orkney and the Purnululu National Park shared the 68p stamps. The photographer was Peter Marlow.
