Germany 2009 – Aurora in Norway
Auroral bands glow green over the island of Tussøya west of Tromsø, Norway, contrasting with clouds lit up orange by street lights. Dr Hinrich Bäsemann of Hamburg took the picture in February 2008. This stamp was one of a set of
four depicting atmospheric phenomena; the subjects on the other three in the
set were a rainbow, a sunset and a lightning flash. The series was a welfare
issue (‘Wohlfahrtspflege’) and so each stamp was surcharged, in this case by 25c.
