Russia 1958 – IGY auroral studies
This stamp was one of a series depicting various scientific studies made during
the International Geophysical Year which ran from July 1957 to the end of 1958.
In the foreground is an all-sky camera known as the C-180, dozens of which were
deployed at Soviet scientific stations in the Arctic and Antarctic to
photograph aurorae during the IGY.
Although the Gibbons catalogue lists this stamp under the year 1957, it was in
fact one of three released in July 1958 to coincide with the 5th Assembly of
the Special Committee for the IGY which met that month in Moscow to discuss the
first year’s findings.
