Ecuador 1953 – Equatorial line monument
This monument was erected in 1936 about 20 km (12 miles) north of Quito, Ecuador, to mark the position of the equator, at least as accurately as it could be measured at the time. The equatorial line monument also appeared on an Ecuadorian stamp in 1949. The monument shown on these stamps was moved from its original position in 1979 and was replaced by a larger version, which is the centre of a tourist attraction called Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the World).
